20/06/2008  INTERVIEW WITH THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ISSF MOHAMED WAHDAN

The Egyptian sport official Mohamed Wahdan, for nearly two decades remains present in the world of shooting, and for the last three mandates keeps being elected for the vice president of ISSF and practically the first man for the shotgun events (clay targets).
He has been a friend of Milan Sotra, the president of Shooting Federation of Serbia for many years now, and his useful consultant ad associate during the building of the shooting range of the “BGD sports center Kovilovo”, one of the best in the world and the place where he is often a guest. He was there on the World Cup in Shotgun Events, from 13 to 22 June.

  • My friend Milan Sotra with a great team of associates organized this World Cup on a very high level, as always – stated Mohamed Wahdan. – I feel that this competition as far as the number of nations participating the most numerous in the history of ISSF with 67 countries and the reason for this great response is that Olympic Games in Beijing are at hand. Everyone wants to check their readiness on time, on a good object which gives a realistic impression of the result.

Only the Americans and Australians are not here out of all participants from the superpower countries?

  • Some of the shooters are in the special camps, as for example world champion Michael Diamond from Australia, and Hancock from America… They don’t want to travel and fly from one part of the world to another with the most important competition in this season so close. The Italians and the Russians left some of the aces in their camps, nevertheless, 390 top class competitors took part in this World Cup.

You are also a delegate of ISSF and practically the head of the competition on the Games in Beijing. You tried out special clay targets which will be used on the Olympic shooting range. What is your impression?

  • More than a year ago ISSF and the organizers of the Games in Beijing agreed that we must make some special clay targets and a Chinese factory got the contract. As a officer of ISSF I cannot mention the name of the factory because it would be advertizing, thus a conflict of interests. I spent a few days in that factory, and the targets were made based on our instructions. We tested them unofficially before the world cup in Beijing, made a poll among the competitors and coaches and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the work because only minor remarks were given. I recently went to the factory and the birds were finished and improved and the impressions are fantastic.

Is it a new product?

  • These birds are one of rare things that Chinese still do not want to export and will be used only in China. The factory is making them free of charge for the organizers of the games which is a significant help. This kind of bird disperses in the air, creating a colored cloud so that the spectators can monitor the competition which is very important for TV too. They are also completely ecologically safe, dissolving naturally leaving no consequences. By the way, we estimate that 80 000 birds will be spent on the competition in Beijing and 120 000 more on the trainings.

From the program in Beijing two events have been removed, Double Trap for women and running targets for men. Was it the decision of ISSF or IOC?

  • I am at liberty to tell you that it was a common decision. IOC asked us to reduce our medal winners for two sets and we decided to choose the two which have the fewest competitors from the fewest continents. But I must say that this sport didn’t lose anything with this decision because the number of the competitors in the other disciplines increased and now we have 390 shooters on the Olympic tournament which makes us one of the most massive individual sports there.

Is there going to be any changes in the Olympic program for the 2012 Olympics in London?

  • ISSF got very good grade by the IOC for everything we have done on the developing, building quality facilities and spreading in certain regions, as well as media presentation. The shooting was voted to stay in the Olympic program with a large number of votes on IOC congress in Singapore as one of the oldest individual sports. Two disciplines have been excluded In Beijing so that in London there will be no changes as well as in at least one Olympic cycle.
